Do you use WD&B´s Rules of Engagement? It´s a supplement to spice up your combat in solo play. It works really well with more sparse combat rules like ItO.
As a choice, when I try a game for the first time I try it "as is", without extras. But so far I played this game a lot (and I am slowly turning my notes into stories), so I think it's a very good suggestion. Plus WBD products are all very good. Yeah, I'm buying it!
Didn´t need much convincing 😀 But yeah, I too try to stick to RAW, at least for a few games. It´s a kind of respect towards the game designer and his vision.
